An Chen is a Taiwanese illustrator based in London. She draws people, plants, and the mechanical world as bold geometry, stripping away labels and boundaries to reveal what things look like before we start categorising them.
Her work is driven by a belief that beneath every label, there is a shared energy. The arc of a running figure, the curve of a pipe, the reach of a root — these movements belong to no single culture or species. They are the language everything alive has in common.
Growing up in a countryside factory town in Taiwan, where factory pipes ran alongside tropical plants and the smell of the sea mixed with machinery, An Chen never saw nature and industry as opposites. That early landscape still shapes the way she draws — organic forms built from geometric structure, mechanical objects that breathe.
She moved to London to study at Cambridge School of Art, graduating with a Master's in Children's Book Illustration in 2019. Her editorial work has since appeared in The New Yorker, The New York Times, Apple, BBC, and more.
